The State of Kelantan, Malaysia, has issued two different 10 Dirham silver coins bearing the Hijra Year Date AH 1431 (=2010). Both these coins were struck at the Singapore Mint, in .999 fine silver, Weight: 29.75 grammes, Diameter: 41 m.m. in Brilliant Uncirculated condition in a box. 

The Obverse of the “BELIA” (Youth) 10 Dirhams features a colourised picture of a Malay Kite, which is usually flown after the post-harvest season. The words “10 Dirhams Kerajaan Negeri Kelantan (Government of the State of Kelantan), 999.0 silver Hijra 1431 (2010)” appear within a double line circle.

The Obverse of the “WANITA” 10 Dirhams features a colourised picture of the Rafflesia flower, the largest flower in the World. This rare flower, which is only found in South East Asia, is named after Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore. The word “10 Dirhams Kerajaan Negeri Kelantan (Government of the State of Kelantan) 999.0 silver Hijra 1431 (2010)” appear within a double line circle.

The Reverses for both the above coins are the same. In Arabic, the modern calligraphy of the Muslim ‘Sha hadah’ and a full Qu’ranic verse, i.e. verse Al-Mu’minum 23.52 ? .

Even though these 10 Dirham coins have a value and a Year Date, they are not the Legal Tender coins of the State of Kelantan. The Legal Tender, of all the States of Malaysia (including the State of Kelantan) is the Ringgit Malaysia ( RM ). However, these 10 Dirham coins may be used to pay ‘zakat’ (religious obligatory tithes), or accepted as a medium of exchange for goods and barter trading, in the State of Kelantan. Some of these coins have also been known to be used as gifts during weddings or ceremony's.

  1. Silver and Gold Dirhams and Dinars were also minted for Perak and Kedah. Kelantan has the most diverse range of alternative currency.
